Gestational Diabetes: Remain Healthy With Diabetic Diet
Gestational diabetes is a medical condition where you have high blood sugar during pregnancy. Diabetic diet for gestational diabetesis an effective way to control high blood sugar as your body gets the sugar through what you eat. Much of the food that you eat and drink is broken down in the digestive system to produce a simple sugar known as glucose. Glucose is of vital importance as it is the main source of energy that body require in order to perform all physical tasks. Glucose is utilized by the body to generate energy with the assistance of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Only with the help of insulin glucose is able to enter the cells in your body which is used to produce energy and continues to stay in your blood. This makes your blood sugar to increase. When the body produces little or no insulin or is not able to properly use the insulin produced the sugar level in the blood becomes very high. This state is known as diabetes.
Gestational diabetes occurs due to hormonal changes at the time of pregnancy. At this period of time certain hormones that are created in the placents limit the insulin from regulating the glucose level in the body creating a disorder that is know as insulin resistance. The placenta is the organ which connects the baby to the uterus by the umbilical chord to through which baby gets nutrients from mother. As time progresses the placenta develops to a larger form and produces higher levels of hormones which results in the increase of insulin resistance.
During this period of time mother’s pancreas produces approx three times of normal amount of insulin in order to overcome insulin resistance. When sufficient amount of insulin is not produced for overcoming the effect created by increased hormone levels it results in high blood glucose and gestational diabetes.
During pregnancy high levels of blood glucose should be treated rapidly. Otherwise it can initiate problems both for the child and the mother as well. Although gestational diabetes does not make baby diabetic but if not treated in time the baby may produce more insulin and gain more weight. This involve the risk of premature birth.
In gestational diabetes blood glucose levels once again reaches normal levels after delivery. There is greater chance for a women who is suffering from gestational diabetes to develop diabetes mellitus type II at a later stage.
Diabetic diet plays a crucial role in controlling high blood sugar levels in a pregnant woman. Foods rich in carbohydrates with high starch content and sugar has the greatest effect on glucose levels. You should be sure that you are eating equal amount of carbohydrate at the same time everyday and see that you have included proteins as well as some unsaturated fats in your meal.
It is very good to eat small meals and snacks evenly spread whole day with the same quantity of carbohydrates at each meal taking precaution not to eat deep fried or extremely fatty food.
